For the first time, more than ten million people in India have been vaccinated in a single day.

According to health ministry data released Saturday, the mark was surpassed the previous day. Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the milestone as a “momentous achievement” for his country. Modi’s government has faced criticism since the Corona deaths of more than 200,000 people in a largely unchecked wave of infections in April and May.

Five billion vaccinations against Corona administered worldwide
The government had set a goal of vaccinating about 1.1 billion adults by the end of the year; however, supply shortages, administrative chaos, and skepticism among many citizens have massively hampered the vaccination campaign. Since the campaign began in January, only 15 percent of adults have been fully vaccinated.

After the Corona crisis in the spring, the number of infections dropped massively, and despite all warnings from experts, the authorities then lifted many of the Corona restrictions. In the meantime, the number of new cases of infection is rising again significantly. On Saturday, authorities reported 46,000 new cases within a day, the most in two months.

The South Asian country of 1.3 billion people has officially recorded 437,370 deaths and more than 32 million cases of infection so far. However, experts believe that the actual death toll could be at least four times higher because few cases are even detected and reported.
